How we verify every dog

No puppy farms, no guesswork. A "KC Verified" badge on Breed Right means we've actually checked — automatically against the Kennel Club, and by hand where needed.

Why it matters

Trust you can see, not just claims

Anyone can say their dog is KC-registered and health-tested. The problem for responsible breeders has always been proving it — and for buyers, knowing who to believe.

Breed Right closes that gap. Every stud and litter is checked before it goes live, and the results are shown openly on the profile. If we can't verify a claim, we don't display the badge. Simple as that.

The process

Three checks behind every badge

When a dog is added, it passes through these checks before any "Verified" badge appears.

1 · Registration check

We confirm the dog's KC registration number against the Kennel Club's records — matching name, breed and ownership — the moment a profile is created.

2 · Health-result lookup

Hip, elbow, eye and DNA results are pulled automatically from the Kennel Club Health Test Results Finder and matched to the dog and its sire/dam.

3 · Manual review

Anything that can't be matched automatically is checked by our team against uploaded certificates before the badge is granted. Real eyes, every time.

Reading a profile

What each badge means

KC Verified

Registration confirmed

The dog's KC registration has been confirmed against Kennel Club records. The foundation of every verified profile.

Health tested

Health results on file

Verified health-test results (hips, elbows, eyes and/or DNA) are recorded and shown on the profile, with the test date.

Pending

Check in progress

The dog has been submitted and is awaiting a manual review. Profiles stay clearly marked until the check is complete.

Health testing

The results we verify

Exactly which tests matter varies by breed — here are the most common.

Hip score

BVA/KC hip scoring — lower is better. We show the score against the breed median.

Elbow score

Elbow dysplasia grade (0–3). A grade of 0 is ideal for breeding.

Eye test

Current BVA/KC/ISDS eye certificate — checked for date as well as result.

DNA tests

Breed-specific DNA results (e.g. PRA, ICT, EIC) shown as Clear, Carrier or Affected.

Being transparent

Every possible status

Verified

Registration confirmed and any health results matched. The badge is shown and the profile is searchable.

Pending review

Awaiting manual review. The profile is visible but clearly marked as not yet verified.

Could not verify

We couldn't confirm the registration or results. No badge is shown, and we let the owner know what's needed.

Questions

Verification FAQ

Is verification free?

Yes — verification is included on every plan, even the free Starter plan. You're never charged to prove your dog is registered and health-tested.

What if my results aren't on the KC website yet?

Upload your certificates and our team will verify them manually. Once the KC records update, the automated check takes over.

How long does it take?

Automated checks are instant. Manual reviews are usually completed within one working day.

Can a badge be removed?

Yes. If results expire (like an eye certificate) or a concern is upheld, the relevant badge is removed until it's put right.
